Description
I arrived in Civita di Bagnoregio, near Orvieto Italy, early one winter morning. A normally deserted town was even more deserted if such a thing is possible! Various websites have listed the population as somewhere between 6-10. To enter the town, you pass through the Porta Santa Maria, a 12th century Romanesque arch. The gate, also known as Porta Cava, was carved in the tuff by the Etruscans 2500 years ago and later called Porta Santa Maria because it is near a church built in honor of the Madonna. In medieval times the door underwent architectural changes such as the insertion of the Gothic arch surmounted by a small loggia. On the sides of the door there are two bas-reliefs with a lion holding a human head between the claws, placed in memory of the victorious popular revolt of the inhabitants of Civita against the Orvieto family of the Monaldeschi of 1457.
