Description
Two tall saguaro cacti stand against a blue sky with scattered clouds, towering over a vibrant field of yellow wildflowers in the Tucson Mountains, west of Tucson, Arizona. The yellow flowers are "Goldenfields", Lasthenia chrysostoma, which are virtually identical to the species Lasthenia californica that paint the deserts of the American West from Oregon to Arizona and south into Mexico after sufficient winter rains.
More than even the California Poppy, this yellow carpet attracts many thousands of "petal peepers" to these otherwise dry and desolate landscapes when conditions have been moist enough for the plants to germinate over the winter. The two saguaro cacti behind give testimony to the amount of rainfall over this season as they are plump with the water they store in their tissues to get them through the hot, dry summer season to come.
