Description
The amazing red and white stamens of the Pink Fairy Duster flowers are backlit during an early spring afternoon on March 2nd, 2024, creating this veritable explosion of color in Tucson Mountain Park and Saguaro National Park, west of Tucson, Arizona.
The Pink Fairy Duster, Calliandra eriophylla, is one of my all-time favorite native plants. The shrub grows about 2 to 3 feet tall, and about as wide. It has no thorns and sports a fine dark green foliage that’s very attractive when there is adequate moisture.. The bloom period is from early spring, and sometimes through fall, depending on rain or irrigation. The cotton-candy pink flowers are frequently described as “powderpuff”, are about an inch and a half around, and look like something a unicorn would eat.
This plants is common to the Sonoran Desert of southern Arizona, and it ranges west to the Mojave Desert of southern California and east in the Chihuahuan Desert through southern New Mexico into west Texas. Bees, butterflies and hummingbirds pollinate the flowers, and the hummingbirds love it because they produce a considerable amount of sweet nectar. The spring bloom coincides with the beginning of the grand hummingbird migration north from Mexico into the western United States. The bloom of 2024 is quite early in the season and intense with the numbers of beautiful flowers covering these hearty plants.
This colorful and dramatic floral mural is also part of my "West By Southwest - An American Mural Project" collection. Like all of the others in the collection it is formatted in the 3:5 ratio and are only available in the 20" x 12", 24" x 14.375", 30" x 18", 40" x 24", 48" x 28.75", and 60" x 36" sizes, also 43.25" X 72" as a massive wall mural for a spectacular presentation on a large wall with stunning color and clarity. Please see the collection for further information.
