Description
Bucephala albeola. Found in Canoa Ranch Conservation Park, south of Green Valley, Arizona. In my experience, these very small ducks are quite shy and stay well away from photographers. They dive frequently. Catching one close enough with just the right light to show the iridescence on their heads is not easy, and is largely a matter of luck. There were several on the lake that day, and they were placid and not too afraid of me.

A wonderful capture of one of my favorite waterfowl.
Pat Goltz replied:
Thank you, Gary! I love the iridescence. I don't see these birds very often, and I rarely see the iridescence. This was a real blessing.

What amazing colors. I love the bands of purple and teal. Featured in American Desert Southwest.
Pat Goltz replied:
Thank you, Jane! Actually those are not colors, but refractions of sunlight. Iridescence. Like that of butterflies. But so beautiful and hard to capture.

EXCELLENT, Pat. When I used to duck hunt I would not shoot these. LFX
Pat Goltz replied:
Thank you, Robert! I wouldn't shoot them either, if for no other reason than they're too small to make a meal!
