Description
Tiny flowers ring the apex of a diminutive pincushion cactus after the first summer rains in the Tucson Mountains west of Tucson, Arizona. The small cactus (Mammillaria grahamii, syn. Mammillaria microcarpa) is a cylindrical, either single or multi-stemmed plant that only grows to about 6 inches in height and 2-1/2 inches in diameter. The pincushion cactus is easily overlooked until just after the first summer rains when it blooms these astonishingly beautiful pink and white-striped flowers. Usually the cactus will bloom only a few flowers at a time, but in this case the apex of the cactus was surrounded by a crown of flowers.
