Description
The distinctive spherical shape and long, toothed leaves of the Dasylirion wheeleri, also known as sotol or desert spoon on a high plateau overlooking Arizona's Salt River Canyon. The Dasylirion is about 5 feet tall and eight feet wide. In late spring it will put up a flower stalk upwards to 20 feet tall. It is commonly found across the Sonoran and Chihuahuan Deserts of Arizona, New Mexico and West Texas, along with northern Sonora and Chihuahua in Mexico.
The alcoholic drink sotol, the northern cousin to tequila and mezcal, is made from the fermented inner cores of the plant. It is the state drink of the Mexican states of Chihuahua, Durango, and Coahuila. It was also used by the natives of the region for food and fiber.
The Tarahumara and Pima Bajo peoples of the Sierra Madre Occidental of Chihuahua weave baskets from the leaves after they strip off the spines from the leaf margins.
The Salt River in Central Arizona cuts deep into the Proterozoic rock layers at the southern edge of the Colorado Plateau in what is billed as “Arizona’s Other Grand Canyon”. The Salt River Canyon is a wonderful desert landscape in its own right, with colorful cliffs, many side canyons draining the plateaus above along with the Salt River deep in its heart.
