Description
A New Mexico Agave (Agave Neomexicana) pushes its colorful flower stalk into the deep and brilliant blue sky over the Central Arizona Highlands. Surrounded by Arizona Juniper trees, the relatively tiny agave only measure about 16 inches tall and 24 inches in diameter. Yet at the end of its life it miraculously pushes up a candelabra-like flower stalk nearly 20 feet high, crowned with crimson red buds and hundreds of bright yellow tubular flowers. Bees and hummingbirds are the primary pollinators of these nectar rich flowers in late spring.
The habitat of the New Mexico Agave ranges from rocky slopes to desert grasslands between 1,400 and 7,000 feet in elevation, and it is usually found in the Chihuahuan Desert of New Mexico and a small portion of West Texas. So I was quite surprised to find them to be widespread on the high plateaus of the Central Arizona Highlands, and also to find them to be among tall Arizona Juniper trees which are commonly found at higher elevations in the Sonoran Desert to the south of this location.

Beautiful image. We have lots of juniper here but I've never seen one of these types of agave tin the wild. It's beautiful. Interesting combination! Featured in American Desert Southwest.
