Description
In early spring the long-spined prickly pear (opuntia macrocentra) blooms with a brilliant yellow flower. The center of the flower is a crimson red, making it distinctive from the other prickly pears. The beautiful flower is small, perhaps 2" (50mm) across, and the petals are translucent, thin and delicate, yet surprisingly durable.
The Opuntia macrocentra is native to the southwestern states of Arizona, New Mexico, and southwest Texas, along with northern Mexico. This speciment was photographed in the Tucson Mountains, west of Tucson, Arizona in the Sonoran Desert.

These blossoms always remind we of a sunburst with their vivid colors. Such little beauties. Featured in American Desert Southwest.
