Description
Nataraja is a representation of the Hindu god Shiva in the role of the cosmic dancer who performs his divine dance to destroy a tired universe and make preparations for the god Brahma to begin the process of creation. This dance is known as Shiva's tandava.
The motif for all of the portrayals of Shiva as Nataraja is the dance that Shiva is said to have performed in Tillai, which is the old name for Chidambaram. It is also possible to refer to him as "Sabesan," which, when translated from the Tamil as "Sabayil aadum eesan," means "The Lord who dances on the dais." The form may be found in most of the Shiva temples that can be found in South India. It is the primary deity at the well-known Thillai Nataraja Temple that can be found in Chidambaram.
