Description
Menaka is considered one of the most beautiful of the celestial Apsaras in Hindu mythology.
Indra, the king of Devas, assigned her to break Vishwamitra's severe fine. Vishwamitra was an honored and respected sage in ancient India. Fearing for his abilities, Indra sent a beautiful celestial nymph named Menaka from heaven to earth to entice him and break his meditation. When Vishwamitra saw the beauty of Menaka, he was struck. She managed to break Vishwamitra's meditation, and the two spent many years in love.
Menaka, on the other hand, fell madly in love with him. Vishwamitra was furious when he realized he had been fooled by Indra. But he only cursed Menaka to be separated from him forever because he also loved her and knew that she had long ago lost all bad intentions towards him.
Menaka is later said to have been the mother of Shakuntala, who was left in the hermitage of Sage Kanva when she was a child. Some years later, Shakuntala fell in love with King Dushyanta and gave birth to his son Bharata, after whom India was named "Bharat."
