Description
Don’t let the beauty of this amazing plant fool you! Look twice and don’t get too close! These are sharp thorns with one intent - to PROTECT! The Clustered Golden Barrel Cactus is so beautiful. This Golden Barrel Cacti (Echinocactus grusonii) showing distinctive clustering habit. They are native to central Mexico and are also known as the Golden Ball or, Mother-in-Law's Cushion. IUCN, the International Union for Conservation of Nature, has put this plant on their "red list" which means they are critically endangered. This photo was taken at Mission San Miguel Arcangel Mission in San Miguel, California. While the spines of this cactus are not toxic, they will pack a painful punch!
