Description
The yellow flower of an Engelmann's Prickly Pear cactus reflects the last rays of the spring evening sun in the Sonoran Desert near Tucson, Arizona. This cactus flower is typically open for just one day, though some times it will open once more the following day with a distinctive peach color tone.
The flowers of this cactus bloom from late April through late May, and are followed at the end of the summer by deep rose to purple egg-shaped fruits that are a very important food source for most of the animals who inhabit the desert.
This common variety of Prickly Pear is found across the Sonoran Desert and east into the Chihuahuan Desert of southern New Mexico and west Texas.
