Description
The pistil of a giant Saguaro (Carnegia gigantea) cactus flower reaches out above a small sea of stamens to greet the bright morning sun at Saguaro National Park in the Tucson Mountains west of Tucson, Arizona.
The saguaro flower blooms at night to be pollinated by bats, and stays open through the following morning where it can also be pollinated by birds and bees, thereby doubling its reproductive chances. This is important because the flower is only open for a single day. The flowers have waxy white petals, are funnel shaped and about 3 inches in diameter. They are only found on the crown of the main stem, along with the tips of arms on more mature plants. This macro photograph was made on a drooping arm that had already grown in a full curve so that the flowers were pointing skyward as they normally would.
The flower of this iconic columnar cactus is the State Flower for the State of Arizona, and the plant is only found in southern Arizona and far northern Mexico in the Sonoran Desert.
This distinctive perspective finds the waxy white flower highlighted against the deep blue desert skies and flower buds, and is formatted in the 1:2 ratio where a bright, bold, colorful and dramatic image is desired to meet a demanding interior design requirement. It is available in widths of up to eight feet with remarkable clarity. More photographs in this unique format will be found in my American Landscape Vistas collection.

That's quite an amazing blossoms. It's another one that looks as if it could be an anemone under the sea. I've seen so many similar while snorkeling among the coral reefs throughout the islands. Featured in American Desert Southwest.
