Description
The giant saguaro cactus (Carnegiea gigantea) is the iconic symbol of the desert Southwest, even though it only occurs in a narrow elevation range here in the Sonoran Desert. This columnar cactus is the namesake of Saguaro National Park which borders both the eastern and western boundaries of Tucson, Arizona.
Some saguaro populations have the typical, vertical growth on the arms. On the west side of the Tucson Mountains in Tucson Mountain Park and Saguaro National Park there are many more varieties of arm growth, such as those found in this detail of a single saguaro with multiple curving arms pointing many directions.
The giant saguaro only begin to sprout arms after they reach around 70 to 80 years of age, indicating that this specimen is likely over 100 years old. Or more. They can live upwards of 200 years, true desert survivors in this harsh and uncompromising environment.
This photograph is part of an independent project I've undertaken to document the many forms as an artistic expression of these unique plants. They are being curated into my "Saguaro Arms' collection. It has been cropped to the classic 4:5 ratio for 16" X 20" prints, all the way up to 48" X 60" for a large, dramatic presentation on a large wall with astonishing clarity.
