Description
The Sonoran Desert is illuminated by the late afternoon sun on a warm January day in this wide landscape featuring many of the plants unique to this ecosystem in Tucson Mountain Park, adjacent to Saguaro National Park west of Tucson, Arizona.
Many saguaros in various stages of growth are shown, from very young to some old enough to sprout arms. The placement of these cacti are notable for the demonstration of the nurse-tree relationship they have with desert trees. The dark green tree to the left of center is an ironwood tree, perhaps two to three hundred years of ago, It provided shelter for the two tall stems growing alongside it for many decades. To the right of center is the pale, yellow-green of the palo verde trees, also providing shelter for six saguaros, including a tiny youngster that is perhaps 15 to 20 years of age.
Saguaro cactus have very wide, shallow roots to absorb all the moisture possible from the scant desert rainfall. The trees put down very deep roots seeking a more steady supply of the precious liquid, so they really do not compete with each other. The trees provide shade from the blistering hot summer sun for the tender tops of young saguaros.
At the far left is a Chain-fruit Cholla alongside another young saguaro, while a Prickly Pear resides at the far right.
"Sonoran Desert Winter Vista" is formatted in the 1:2 ratio vista size for where beautiful, bold, colorful and unique landscape art is desired to satisfy a demanding interior design requirement such as a hallway, corridor, meeting room or large interior space. This photograph can be obtained in widths of up to 7 feet with sublime color and remarkable clarity. It can be found in my American Landscape Vistas collection.
