Description
The cotton-candy pink flowers of the Pink Fairy Duster are frequently described as “powderpuff”, about an inch and a half around, and look like something a unicorn would want to eat. The stamens are sticky and the flower is full of nectar, so I am sure that a unicorn would find these beautiful flowers a sweet treat to indulge in.
The vibrant pink blossoms with striking filament-like structures are clustered together, creating a burst of color that stands out against the greenery in the background. Each flower has a multitude of stamens radiating from its center, providing a unique and feathery appearance.
The Pink Fairy Duster, Calliandra eriophylla, is one of my all-time favorite native plants. The shrub grows about 2 to 3 feet tall, and about as wide. It has no thorns and sports a fine dark green foliage that’s very attractive when there is adequate moisture.. The bloom period is from early spring, and sometimes through fall, depending on rain or irrigation.
This plants is common to the Sonoran Desert of southern Arizona, and it ranges west to the Mojave Desert of southern California and east in the Chihuahuan Desert through southern New Mexico into west Texas. Bees, butterflies and hummingbirds pollinate the flowers.
The hummingbirds love it because they produce a considerable amount of sweet nectar, and the spring bloom coincides with the beginning of the grand hummingbird migration north from Mexico into the western United States. The bloom of 2024 was quite early in the season and very intense with vast numbers of beautiful flowers covering these hearty plants. This macro photograph was made on March 16th, 2024.
