Description
Dungeness nuclear power station, Kent, England. Dungeness has two pairs of gas-cooled reactors (GCR), Dungeness A1 and A2 (square buildings at far left), and Dungeness B1 and B2 (round building at upper centre). A1 and A2 started in 1965, are now run by BNFL Magnox, and produce 450 megawatts of electrical energy. B1 and B2 have operated from 1985, being run by British Energy to produce 1110 megawatts of electrical power. Dungeness A is set to close in 2006, and Dungeness B should close by 2008. Nuclear power gains energy from controlled chain reactions involving the fission (splitting) of large atomic nuclei like uranium.
