Description
I had the opportunity to paint on Nantucket and in two sessions I created this depiction of the feeling of Nantucket, I can still hear the clap clap of activity which echoes even on a quiet afternoon in September. There's quite a history that makes up this small island of the coast of Massachusetts. This brick row of houses were built by the Starbuck familly back in the day for three sons. The young girl of the family was left out. She later married and her husband built for her a marvelous more elaborate home just across the street and not of brick I'm sure many other stories can be told of the island that virtually remains the same throughout history, why change it?
Our eyes are an amazing gift, when we are there they show us the scene and fill the senses with a sense of place and are able to delight us in the textures of the leaves, the sunshine on the buildings forming the corners and the white formal entries. It is the artists' hand that puts it to canvas and brings you there or back to there if you've been. I often marvel at other plein air artists who have done the very same thing and have brought me to places that I've never been before. Thank you God for the gift!
