My maiden name is Jacqueline Crespo and I was born at Carlisto Garcia hospital in Havana Cuba in March 1962. My father named me after Jacqueline Kennedy, which was something Cubans were not to do! My father was sent to work in the fields due to the fact he refused to change my name and to keep it. I came to this country when I was six and a half on a cold December day in 1969. As an Afro Cuban child I knew by age nine my love of art was starting to flourish. I became a self taught abstract artist, as I got older my love of art consumed my every thought. I married a man that was Italian which is where my last name Pecoroni comes from. His love for me saw no color, I was his Afro Cuban wife and together we have one daughter. According to what Cubans would consider the american dream, I wanted and needed more and that yearning was to paint! Being a wife, a mother an employee was not enough for me.
As an Afro Cuban artist my inspiration comes from my past memories in Cuba, family and current life situations. Where most artist see a blank canvas, I already see my latest creation. My use of colors are a combination of the following materials acrylic, spray paint, oil, charcoal and colored pencils. The use of various brushes or a pallet knife allows me to combine and create unique pieces of art. My process starts with just one color in mind and the rest just happens. Things in my life started to change when diabetes entered my life and slowly took my sight from me. The loss of my sight only made me a stronger person and drove me to paint more. I see my art in my mind, a smell, a conversation a touch even music has enlighten me to continue to paint despite my current loss of my vision. The loss of vision and only seeing a blur has not impaired me from my journey to inspire others through art.
